Our Approaches
Key approaches
Community Mobilization and
Awareness Raising
Here, we gather citizens, local authorities, and other development partners to discuss a range of issues we are working on. Citizens can pick the brains of the knowledgeable and share their own firsthand knowledge of problems they face.
Additionally, following the showing of local films, local communities engage in open dialogue with their elected officials and other decision-makers to discuss and find solutions to the problems brought up by the films. We also use art performances to mobilize the citizens to take in our initiatives
Films Production, Community Film Screening Caravan and Festival
We produce audiovisuals that reflect society and disseminate them to the intended areas. We organize local film screenings where we use the local community movie theaters, in Tanzania widely known as “Vibanda Umiza”, to deliver the messages to the local community.
Under its flagship project, the Sauti Zetu Project, MEDEA intends to design and stage a human rights film festival over the next three years. To start, the Sauti Zetu Film Festival will be held in the Dar es Salaam region, with a vision to expand to other regions in the near future. Sauti Zetu is Swahili for “Our Voices,” and the festival’s main goal is to elevate the voices of ordinary citizens through films made with a focus on human rights.
Media Campaign
We consider utilizing the power of both traditional and digital media. We believe that people’s stories are meant to be shared, and the best way to share these stories is through the media. We create media content from radio and television shows, SBCC content, and we use influential journalists, bloggers, and social media influencers to spread our message through their platforms.
The Kivulini Storytellers
Since we believe in the power of youth to drive change, MEDEA strives to empower and create space for young artists to explore and nurture their creative careers. The Kivulini Storytellers, which translates roughly as Under The Shade Storytellers, is a free art space where we provide artists with the tools and knowledge of the art eco system that they need to succeed in the art world while also telling human-interest stories from a human rights perspective. The storytellers include visual artists, filmmakers, singers, painters, and performing arts enthusiasts.
